Crab and lobster traps (also called pots) are specially designed traps used to catch these crustaceans. Whether for commercial or recreational purposes, the smartly designed traps can make your harvests come more easily.
Skyhall provides the most modern-day crab and lobster traps, both in shape and materials. The rectangular cage allows for easy and efficient stacking on the deck. Whole cages are constructed from specially treated meshes, which are welded from superior galvanized steel wires with fusion-bonded PVC coating.
The modified pots are composed of several parts to enable the capturing process to proceed smoothly and to let go of the small creatures. Crab and lobster traps are made from extremely durable meshes, which are welded from special wire with galvanized steel wire inside and fusion-bonded PVC coating outside. This makes them resistant to rust and corrosion in saltwater.
This is the trap’s key mechanism. They are inward-projecting funnels, made of netting and designed to be easy for a crustacean to push into (attracted by bait) but difficult to find and exit due to their instinct to swim backwards or upwards when startled.
A small mesh-made pouch is located inside the “kitchen” to hold the bait securely. Therefore, the bait doesn’t get eaten immediately but continues to release a scent trail.
These are small openings with plastic frames in legally mandated size. They allow undersized juvenile crabs and lobsters to escape, protecting the breeding population and ensuring future harvests. They also allow non-target species (e.g., small fish) to get out.
A central, reinforced point on the top of the trap where the main line is attached. It is built to withstand the immense strain of being hauled from the seafloor.
A section of the trap is secured with biodegrade material. If the trap is lost, this panel will disintegrate after a certain period, creating a large opening. This allows any captured animals to escape, preventing “ghost fishing”.
8 Super Fusion Bond (SFB)
We are proud to claim the application of Super Fusion Bond (SFB) during the production of crab and lobster trap meshes. SFB is a special type of vinyl coating blended with an exclusive thermoplastic formula. It’s developed to fight against the extremely corrosive environment of CX, quite suitable for the protection of steel materials in coast and sea areas with high humidity and corrosion atmosphere.
Common PVC or polyester coating may use swelling agent to thicken the coating layer of steel wires in the sacrifice of surface resilience. That’s why you may see pinholes, thin spots, blistering, and breakage on vinyl-coated products. Unlike the inferior coating, SFB fuses directly to the core materials, realizing a tight adhesion to the substrate. Whether it’s extreme cold or blazing heat, the coating layer will contract and expand integrally with the inner substrate to ensure an impermeable bond. Despite its resilient and robust composition, SFB is nontoxic and recyclable.
How Does A Crab and Lobster Trap Work
A lobster or crab will enter through the net “head” to go after the bait in a bait well placed in the “kitchen.” When it tries to exit, it lands in the “parlor.” Some traps have more than one kitchen and parlor to attract and separate more animals. There is an escape vent that is large enough to let all but the legal-sized lobsters escape. If the lobster is small enough, it can escape from the vent easily.
Strong-smelling, oily, and durable bait works best. Popular choices include:
Fish Heads & Frames: Mackerel, salmon, bluefish, and menhaden (aka “pogies”) are top choices. Their oily flesh creates a strong scent trail.
Chicken Necks/Wings: A cheap, effective, and tough bait that stays on the hook well. (Note: Check local regulations, as some areas prohibit mammalian meat for bait).
Squid: Very tough and has a great scent, but can be expensive.
Your Target Species: Are you after lobsters off a boat or blue crabs from a pier?
Local Regulations: Ensure the trap’s design, size, and materials are legal in your area (e.g., escape vent size).
Durability: Plastic-coated wire resists corrosion better than plain galvanized wire. Wooden lobster traps are incredibly durable but heavy.
Portability: Collapsible traps are much easier to transport and store.
Assembly: Some come fully assembled, others as kits.
This is a significant environmental concern. It occurs when a trap is lost (e.g., its buoy line is cut by a boat propeller) and continues to catch and kill animals indefinitely. Regulations for biodegradable escape panels are designed to mitigate this problem by creating a failure point that allows creatures to escape after a period of time.
