Traffic delineator posts come as tools to direct transit away from specific zones for reasons like ongoing constructions, public works, etc. During the past years, the design of delineator posts has been refined to address more practical needs. Among those improved delineator members, flexible delineator posts are widely applied due to their durable, flexible, and removable features. Today, we are going to talk more about flexible delineator posts.

What is a flexible delineator post?
A flexible delineator post is a traffic device that is temporarily installed to direct vehicles away from places where danger may exist. They are frequently used as hazard alerts that can catch the attention of motorists successfully due to their high visibility. Wrapped with reflective strips, the flexible delineator posts can be noticed easily even in poor lighting conditions.
Now they are widely applied in most of the countries all over the world to direct drivers away from hazardous situations, or areas under construction. They are relatively inexpensive, and have proven to be highly effective at alerting drivers to road conditions which need to be avoided.

Types of flexible delineator posts
Structure of flexible delineator post
Flexible delineator posts are composed of posts, reflective strips, and bases. Flexible delineators usually come with two types of posts, the round top and flat top respectively. And flat traffic delineators are more common than round ones.
The posts and bases of surface mount delineators are produced separately and finally assembled together by bolts. Watch the video below, you will better understand how the traffic delineators are manufactured and normally packed.
Specifications of flexible delineator posts
Beside top shapes, the reboundable delineator posts can also be produced into different types in a variety of base sizes, post heights, post diameters, post colors, and reflective colors.
Reflective color: white, yellow, orange, blue, green, red high-intensity reflective
Installation and application of flexible delineator posts
How to install surface mounted delineator posts
Step 1 Place the base of post at the spot where you want the guide post to stand.
Step 2 Take a drill bit and insert it into each one of the 4 holes in the base, giving the bit a tap with your hammer to make small marks on the pavement surface.
Step 3 Drill holes with a rotary hammer drill at the marking points. Clean away debris from the holes and the pavement surface. Insert one lag shield anchor into each hole.
Step 4 Line up the holes in base of the post with the freshly drilled holes in the pavement, and Insert one lag screw into each hole. Use a socket wrench to tighten the screws.
Applications of flexible delineator posts
Flexible traffic delineator posts are applied in many places to regulate traffic. They are specifically designed as a high performance/impact delineator for locations where traffic from side streets would be merging with traffic in a thoroughfare.
Highways
Parks
Golf courses
Airport runways
Construction/public works
Crossing guards
Features of Flexible Delineator Posts
Impact Resistant
In order to provide durable performance, flexible delineator posts are normally produced from high-density polyethylene. And the quality rubber base can also withstand crushing from cars. To get reliable data on the reboundable traffic delineators, Skyhall Fence did a true impact experiment which you will get its detail later in the article.
Full Visibility
The essential function of flat traffic delineator posts lies in warning of hazards in roadways to vehicles. The point is, delineator posts should catch drivers’ attention first. Produced in bright and obvious colors, those traffic delineator are easy to be noticed. And reflective strips enable posts visible even in poor lighting conditions.
Reusable
These delineators are reusable due to the flexible character and reliable quality. They can be removed and applied to other areas for traffic channelizing once the current environment doesn’t need them anymore.
A true traffic delineator test from Skyhall Fence
Skyhall Fence made an experiment to test the true impact resilience of flexible traffic delineators.
Preparation: a flexible traffic delineator, a car, impact No. counter
Purpose: The car will run over the flexible traffic delineator to test how many times of hits can the delineator withstand. A whole back and forth is counted as one hit.
Results for Different Times
No. of hits: 50 no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: Post deformed at the attacked position. Small crack appeared at the top of the post. The top reflector strip fell off the post.
50 times hits to traffic delineator
traffic delineator effect for 50 times hits
No. of hits: 100 no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: A small crack appeared on the side of the post.
100 times hits to traffic delineator
traffic delineator effect for 100 times hits
No. of hits: 150 no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: Side crack got wider than before. Post tilted slightly.
150 times hits to traffic delineator
traffic delineator effect for 150 times hits
No. of hits: 200 no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: No other changes.
No. of hits: 250 no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: Bolts (between the post and the base) got looser than before.
250 times hits to traffic delineator
traffic delineator effect for 250 times hits
No. of hits: 250+ no.s
Car speed: 45-50 km/h
Performance Impact: Post cracked and damaged.
Final conclusion: Quality traffic delineators can withdraw about 250 times of solid hits (the car runs over the whole post body forth and back). While in our daily life, drivers won’t hit the delineators as the experiment demonstrated but stop cars immediately once the car touches the post. That indicates, the delineator can bear more times of hits in our real life.
Conclusion
Surface mount flat top traffic delineators are mainly used to redirect vehicles away from hazards on the roadway. The bright colors and optional reflective sheeting make posts visible even in night time and poor weather conditions.
The flexible delineator posts are removable and easy to install. They can be removed and applied to other areas for traffic channelizing once the current environment doesn’t need them anymore. Getting quality traffic delineators seems quite important for construction projects since re-usability can save contractors money.
