Generally speaking, steel bollards are placed to regulate traffic and vehicle access. Therefore, we recommend the bollards be placed no less than 3 feet apart and no more than 5 feet apart.

If there is pedestrian traffic to be considered while placing steel bollards, make sure to maintain a minimum of 3 feet between barriers so that the disabled pedestrians could go through successfully.  And the distance should be measured from the protrusion part of the bollards to ensure the safe passage of most wheelchairs.

Installing bollards in an improper way will be a disaster.  It’s quite necessary to consider the following tips before installing the bollards.

  • Make sure there are any regulations related to the placement of bollards, for example, the Disabilities Act in America requires maintaining a minimum of 3 feet between the barriers to account for disabled pedestrians. Follow the regulations strictly to ensure your projects carry on smoothly.
  • Local codes and ordinances.  Take the needs of fire truck or other emergency vehicles into consideration.
  • Keep the bollard spacing no wider than 5 feet to protect against vehicle traffic.
  • For loading dock bollards, the minimum width of trucks and other containers should be considered.
